There is no simplistic method of quantifying such changes, and attempts to do so (e.g. by measuring reflective properties of accretionary deposits such as rock varnish) have only resulted in unconvincing results.
Besides carbonates and oxalates there are many other forms of mineral accretionary deposits on rock sur- faces that may conceal or underlie rock art, and while their essential components contain no radiocarbon, a variety of inclusions may be present in them.
Indeed, the term has often been misused to describe a variety of dunkle Rinden and other accretionary deposits that are not rock varnish.
Whereas Dorn continued to work almost exclusively with rock varnishes, Watchman diversified his technique and, having earlier experimented with oxalates, included analyses of other accretionary deposits, notably silica skins.
Under identical controlled conditions of a ''blind test'', Dorn (1997) and Watchman (1995, 1996) sampled accretionary deposits in the Coˆ a valley, Portugal.
